O.I. Pera (the Interprofessional Pear Organization) was established in 2012 with the main aim of enhancing the local pear growing system - both for fresh consumer use and for industrial processing - and making it stronger and more competitive. In order to reach this aim O.I Pera uses a series of tools to promote discussion, coordination and cooperation between all the members of the supply chain, also to protect the final consumer.
In particular, O.I. has the following objectives:
- To improve knowledge and transparency of pear growing and the market;
- To develop appreciation of pears, particularly of the Abate variety;
- To provide information and conduct the necessary research to direct growing towards more suitable products for market requirements and consumer tastes and expectations, with a special focus on quality and protecting the environment.

O.I. Pera also plays an important role in enhancing appreciation of pears by organising participation in national and international exhibitions, events and conventions. It also has an informative role: collecting and spreading information on growing and market trends in the other European countries where pears are grown and on a worldwide level; spreading information on laws and regulations connected with the pear growing industry, defined nationally and by the EU.
