The International Pear Trade Fair establishes its status as the technical and commercial reference point for the sector
For the third year running, the pavilions of Ferrara Fiere will host the most important companies in the supply chain and the large international conventions of the World Pear Forum
FERRARA – On 28-29-30 November FuturPera – the International Pear Trade Fair is back. Having launched in 2015 and now in its third edition, this highly specialist event has become an eagerly awaited occasion for all the players in the field. Technical innovation, large conventions on growing and sales and marketing, as well as the possibility to interact with the most important international players, are the exceptional ingredients of FuturPera 2019.
The location of the trade fair will again be Ferrara Fiere, 16 thousand square metres of exhibition area, ready to host the most important Italian and foreign companies in the sector: variety research, nursery, crop protection products, growing, harvest and post-harvest, agricultural mechanisation, logistics, packaging, product sales, import-export.
The main objective of the fair will again be to involve the entire supply chain, creating and consolidating exchange and commercial relations, both at internal and external market level. In fact, thanks to the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region, important international buyers will be present to promote and develop the internationalisation of our top quality pears. The search for new market outlets at European and extra-European level, as well as the consolidated German and French ones, is essential for a sector that needs to carry on growing and innovating.
After the success and great participation of the 2017 edition, FuturPera will host the World Pear Forum again. A prestigious international forum, rich in conventions, meetings and round tables, dedicated to the main themes of the sector. There will be a focus on current issues, both from a technical and a commercial point of view, with a particular emphasis on market potential and new consumer trends. As well as the World Pear Forum there will be a wide calendar of technical meetings organised by exhibiting companies, who will be presenting the latest news on crop protection products, variety innovation, agricultural machinery and sustainable growing.
FuturPera 2019 will also “come out” of the Ferrara Fiere pavilions, thanks to a series of events dedicated to increasing product value. The city of Ferrara, the “Italian Pear Capital” and its rural areas, will be the perfect setting for underlining the economic, culinary and cultural importance of a sector that is the heart and soul of the agricultural world of the Po Valley, from Modena to Rovigo.
The Land of top quality pears
A productive area between Emilia-Romagna and Veneto, in the heart of the Po Valley where 70-80% of Italian pears are grown. A true “Land of top quality pears”, particularly the Abate Fétel but also other cultivars now famous and enjoyed throughout the world, such as Carmen, Santa Maria, Williams, Max Red Barlett, Conference, Decana del Comizio and Kaiser.
With its productive vocation and an innovative supply chain in continuous development, this area has become the centre of Italian pear growing and from here new ideas and plans are conceived for the continuous exploitation of the product on new markets. Italy produces an average of 750,000 tonnes of pears, hence its status as the top grower in Europe. The total amount of pears grown in Italy in 2018 was approximately 730,000 tonnes and of these 505,000 were grown in Emilia-Romagna. The general quality of the product reaching the market is excellent, also due to increasingly advanced growing techniques that place great importance on environmental sustainability.
Italian pears are also becoming more popular with Italians themselves, as shown by the consistent increase on the domestic market since 2014. Specifically, from January to November 2018, consumptions increased by 7% with respect to the same period during the previous year, with a variation that reaches +37% compared to 2013 demonstrating that the commitment to growing and increasing the value of the product is providing good results. But Italian pears are also popular abroad and an average of 150,000 tonnes of pears are exported, over 20% of the total amount grown. And it is actually the German market that has the highest demand for top quality Italian pears, as over 40% of the pears exported are sold in Germany. In general the Italian product is enjoyed throughout the European Union where 90% of exported pears are sent, in particular France, Romania, Austria and some countries in Eastern Europe.
The third edition of FuturPera is designed and organised by Ferrara Fiere e Congressi and O.I Pera (Organismo Interprofessionale Pera).
