Abate Fétel
I’m called Abate Fétel, I was born in France and was named after an abbot (Abbé Fétel) who discovered me in the mid-1800s. I’ve lived in Italy for a long time, in a luxuriant plain between Emilia-Romagna and Veneto which has become my home.
I’m tall and my harmonious shape is like a ballerina stretching up on her toes to try and touch the sky. People who know me well know that I have a strong and decisive character but, at the same time, I know how to give the right amount of sweetness.
My ideal dress is a nice green - yellow rusty colour and sometimes, even if I’m not shy, I can blush as I let myself get a bit too sun kissed. I don’t need make-up or perfume as I’m naturally beautiful and pleasantly aromatic.
I know I’m unique, which is why I’m known as the Queen of pears, and that’s because I live in a plain where I’m born and can grow with respect for everything around me and in the awareness that I can go a long way to be discovered, eaten and loved.
Conference
I’m called Conference and my name has an unusual and prestigious origin. In 1885, the year I was born, I won first prize in the National British Pear Conference in London. From then on I did a lot of travelling before reaching Emilia-Romagna where I was discovered and loved from 1950 onwards. I found my home here in a place where I can grow with all the necessary care and an ideal climate. I have a conical and elongated shape and a very long stalk as if I were constantly trying to grasp something, maybe a sunbeam. I am rough and may seem grumpy, but I have an unexpected hidden sweetness that only those who choose to eat me know well. My dress is green-yellow, with extensive rusty parts that can seem almost bronze and my flavour is intense, perfumed and juicy. In fact, it's a pleasure to bite into me and let me dissolve slowly on the palate. I love autumn, when people start harvesting me, but also winter as I can rest happily for a long time and be enjoyed until January.Doyenne du Comice
My name is Doyenne du Comice but almost everyone simply calls me Doyenne. Oui, I’m French and my strange name comes from the place where I was discovered, in 1849: the Comice Horticole fruit garden of Maine-et-Loire, in the Loire region. Now I live permanently in the Po Valley but I love exploring new places and meeting people who can get to know me and appreciate me.
The most striking thing about me is definitely my unusual and let’s say original shape. I’m round, actually the roundest out of all my sisters and one of the largest. But this ruddy appearance shouldn’t fool you - I’m delicate and need to be treated with great care, especially when I’m completely ripe. I wear a green dress with lenticels that are sometimes rusty and very clear and reddish stripes that appear when I'm exposed to the sun. I’m juicy, nicely sweet and excellent to bite into from mid-September, when I’m harvested and for most of the winter, when I fill the coldest days with flavour.
